What we collect

We collect the minimum personal data required to operate the site. When you visit a page, our server logs your IP address, user-agent string, requested URL and referring URL. When you email us, we store your email address and the contents of your message for as long as needed to respond and, where relevant, to keep a record of a correction request.

We do not run behavioural advertising, we do not use third-party trackers for analytics, and we do not sell personal data to any third party. Any future change to that position will be documented in this policy and highlighted at the top of the page for at least three months.

Cookies

The site uses a small set of first-party cookies for session management and user preference. A separate cookies page details the full list, purpose and duration of each cookie. You can decline non-essential cookies via your browser settings, and the site will continue to function.

Legal basis for processing

Personal data processed via server logs is handled under our legitimate interest in operating a secure website and defending against abuse. Personal data submitted by email is processed on the basis of your consent (implied by your having sent the email) and, where the email concerns a correction request, our legitimate interest in maintaining an accurate editorial record.

Retention

Server logs are retained for 90 days for security-monitoring purposes and then deleted. Email correspondence is retained for as long as needed to respond, and correction-request emails are retained for two years so we can demonstrate the basis for any editorial change.

Your rights

Under UK GDPR you have the right to access the personal data we hold about you, to request correction of inaccurate data, to request erasure (subject to our record-keeping obligations), to object to processing, and to complain to the Information Commissioner's Office if you believe we have handled your data improperly. Material changes to this policy will be highlighted at the top of the page for at least three months. Minor clarifications will be dated at the foot of the page. This version is dated 25 September 2026.

International data transfers

Personal data processed via this site is stored on servers located in the United Kingdom or the European Economic Area. Where data is transferred outside the UK or EEA (for example, to a technical service provider based elsewhere), the transfer is protected by an adequacy decision, standard contractual clauses, or an equivalent safeguard recognised by the UK Information Commissioner's Office. We do not transfer personal data to jurisdictions without an equivalent standard of protection.

Users under 18

This site is aimed exclusively at readers aged 18 and over. We do not knowingly collect personal data from users under 18. If you believe a user under 18 has submitted personal data through this site, please email [email protected] and we will delete the data promptly.

Data security

Personal data is stored using access-controlled infrastructure with encryption in transit and at rest. Access to personal data is restricted to editorial staff who need it to respond to a query or maintain a correction record.
