Best Odds Guaranteed 2026, What BOG Pays and When

Best odds guaranteed means that if you take a price on a horse and the starting price turns out bigger, the book pays you at the bigger one. This page shows what that was worth across a full week of British and Irish racing, when best odds guaranteed applies and when it does not, how it works on each way bets, and why it is one of the first things taken away from a winning account.

What best odds guaranteed is

A racing bet can be struck two ways: at a price you take before the race, or at the starting price, the SP, set by the on-course market as the race begins. Best odds guaranteed, usually shortened to BOG, takes the choice away. If your horse wins and its SP is bigger than the price you took, the book pays you at the SP. If the SP is shorter, you keep your price. Whether a book runs it at all is one of the concessions compared across the best betting sites UK punters can use.

Best odds guaranteed, worked through

You take 5/1, the SP is 8/1

A 10 pound win bet is paid at 8/1: 90 pounds back instead of 60

You take 5/1, the SP is 3/1

You keep your 5/1: 60 pounds back, the same as without BOG

You take 10/1 each way, the SP is 14/1 and the horse is placed

At a fifth the odds, the 5 pound place half is paid at 14/5 instead of 2/1: 19 pounds back instead of 15

The horse loses

Nothing changes. BOG only ever improves the price on a bet that pays

What BOG was worth on a week of racing

We took every British and Irish race from 20 to 26 September 2026 and compared each winner’s first price shown on course with its SP. Of 262 winners with a first show recorded, 116 shortened before the off, 111 drifted and 35 did not move. Taking the better of the two prices paid on average 7.5% more than the SP alone.

Bar chart of 262 UK and Irish winners: 116 shortened, 111 drifted and 35 unchanged from first show to starting price
Source: Sporting Life results, every UK and Irish race 20 to 26 September 2026, 262 winners with a first on-course show recorded. First show is the first price shown on course, a proxy for an early price, not a morning price.

What the numbers mean

  • The shorteners are where taking a price beats the SP, with or without BOG
  • The drifters are where BOG earns its name: without it, a punter who took the early price is paid less than the SP
  • With BOG you collect on both sides, which is why it adds up to 7.5% across the week
  • The price on the course is not a fair price either: the SP book on the same races averaged 101.1% plus about 1.95 points for every runner, measured on our horse racing betting page

Take the price or wait for the SP

Without best odds guaranteed, taking an early price is a bet on which way the market will move, and our week of winners gives no steer: they shortened and drifted in almost equal numbers. With BOG the question disappears.

  • With BOG, take the price as soon as you are happy with it; if the horse drifts, you are paid the SP anyway
  • Without BOG, the early price wins only when the horse shortens, which happened to 116 of 262 winners in our sample
  • An early price at the best book on offer, with BOG behind it, is the strongest racing bet a book will give you

When best odds guaranteed applies, and to whom

BOG is a promotion, not a rule, so each book decides when it starts and who gets it. The terms usually settle three things.

  • The start time: some books offer BOG from a set time on race day, others as soon as a market opens
  • The races: British and Irish racing is the usual scope, with other countries and big festivals handled case by case
  • The customer: some books tie BOG to a loyalty scheme you qualify for by betting a set amount each week, and any book can remove it from an account

What best odds guaranteed covers

Check what the terms exclude before relying on BOG for a particular bet. These are the lines that most often decide it.

Usually covered, and usually not

Win singles on British and Irish racing

Covered wherever a book offers BOG

Each way bets

Usually covered on both halves, with the place part paid at the place fraction of the SP

Multiples

Covered at some books, not at others

Ante-post bets

Usually excluded, because they are struck days or weeks before the race

Boosted prices and free bets

Often excluded, or paid at the boosted price only

The extra paid

Some books cap how much extra BOG can pay on a single bet

Best odds guaranteed and each way bets

Each way bets are where BOG is easiest to overlook and often worth most, because horses backed each way are usually at bigger prices, where every step up the odds ladder is worth more in pounds.

  • When BOG covers an each way bet, the place half is settled at the place fraction of whichever price is bigger
  • In the worked example above, a drift from 10/1 to 14/1 turns a 15 pound place return into 19 pounds
  • The win half gains in the same way, so a drift pays twice on an each way bet that wins

How the place terms and fractions work is covered in our guide to each way bets.

Rule 4, non-runners and dead heats under BOG

Best odds guaranteed changes the price a bet is paid at. It does not change the other racing rules.

  • Rule 4 deductions still apply when a horse is withdrawn late, and each book’s rules say which deduction is used when it pays at the SP
  • A dead heat still halves the stake on that selection before the price is applied
  • A non-runner in a multiple is still treated as void, and the bet runs on the rest

To see how a Rule 4 deduction or a dead heat changes a return, use our bet calculator.

When best odds guaranteed is taken away

Because BOG pays more to punters who take good early prices, it is one of the first things a book removes from an account it considers too sharp. On racing accounts, losing BOG is one of the common forms a restriction takes.

Illustration of a wall switch turned off, for best odds guaranteed removed from a betting account
Illustration: a switch turned off. BOG can be switched off on one account while the promotion stays on the homepage.

Best odds guaranteed beyond horse racing

BOG began on horse racing and is still strongest there. Elsewhere it is patchier.

  • Greyhound racing: offered by some books on British meetings, on the same principle as racing
  • Football: where it exists at all, usually on outright markets rather than match odds, as covered on our football betting sites page
  • Other sports: rare, because most markets have no starting price to compare with

Getting the most out of best odds guaranteed

Five habits that turn BOG into money.

  1. Take the early price

With BOG behind you, there is no reason to wait for the SP on a horse you want to back.

  2. Shop the early price

BOG improves the price you take, so start from the best early price you can find.

  3. Check the start time

A bet struck before BOG starts for the day is paid at the price you took.

  4. Use it each way

Each way bets at bigger prices are where a drift adds most.

  5. Keep more than one account

If BOG is removed at one book, another may still apply it.

Is BOG worth choosing a book for

BOG is a concession on top of a price, not a substitute for one. A book that offers BOG but prices its early markets short can still pay you less than a keener book without it, because the early price is where the bet starts. The best combination is a keen early price and BOG together, and the price is still the part to check first.

  • Compare the early price on the horse you want, not the promotions list
  • Treat BOG as the tie-breaker between two books at the same price
  • Remember that prices move for reasons you can read, covered in our guide to how betting odds work

Best odds guaranteed questions answered

If you take a price on a horse and it wins at a bigger starting price, the book pays you at the starting price. If the starting price is shorter, you are paid at the price you took.

BOG is a promotion each book chooses to run, and it can be withdrawn from individual accounts. The books in our ranking above are compared on their current offers; check each book’s terms for BOG before you rely on it.

It depends on the book. Some offer BOG from a set time on the morning of the race, others as soon as the market opens. A bet struck before BOG starts for the day is settled at the price you took.

Usually, yes. Where it does, both halves are covered, and the place part is paid at the place fraction of the bigger price.

At some books. Where it does, each winning leg is settled at the better of its taken price and its SP. Check the terms, because many books limit BOG to singles.

Yes, where you can get it. Across a week of UK and Irish racing, the better of the first price shown and the SP paid 7.5% more than the SP on the winners. Its value is highest on horses that drift and on each way bets at bigger prices.

Books remove BOG from accounts they consider too successful at taking early prices. It is one of the common forms a racing restriction takes.

Yes. BOG changes the price a winning bet is paid at, not the racing rules. Rule 4 deductions, dead heats and non-runners are handled as usual.
